Design and Applied Technology (DAT) Project Learning – Teacher Training Workshop

Designed to support Hong Kong DSE Design and Applied Technology (DAT) project learning, this workshop trains teachers to use a smart sanitary ware / smart health appliance kit and develop their skills in project-based learning, 3D modelling, prototyping and basic programming.

Learning Objectives

• Understand the principles of 3D printing and 3D modelling.

• Use the kit to create simple product prototypes quickly.

• Receive 3D modelling training and use feature-based modelling in Autodesk Fusion to build components.

• Receive intensive training in using microcontroller development boards (Micro:bit / Arduino) and use the kit for simple, rapid programming.

Course Outline

Using smart sanitary ware / smart health appliances as the project theme, the workshop helps teachers turn a design assignment into a project-based learning activity that can be taught, built and assessed.


1. Designing and Defining Specifications

• Goal-oriented component design.

• Simplifying design details.


2. Specialised 3D Modelling

• Feature-based modelling in Autodesk Fusion, including technical drawings, renderings, and exporting files for various 3D printing and laser-cutting applications.

• Mechanical-part modelling for 3D models.

• Modifying 3D model components.


3. Basic Programming

• Rapid programming.

• Electronic component assembly.

• Course content can be adjusted to meet participants’ needs.

• Each participant receives one kit, one set of editable code, and one 3D parts printing service (up to 50 g).
